Summer Reading

Did you know that studies have shown that students who read at least 6 books during the summer maintained or improved their skills for their grade level?  Sadly, those who did not read during the summer saw a slip in skill levels and spent the first few weeks of the academic year struggling to catch up.  Some children have trouble returning to school after summer vacation, but when those children are involved in extensive summer reading, they will spend the summer improving their reading skills rather than letting them fall behind.  The bottom line is that students who read during the summer do better in the fall.

As parents who are serious about the education of your child(ren), you understand the importance of a rigorous academic program.  This is why FCS encourages summer reading by assigning each student in grades 2-10 a book to read during the break.  Each book has been hand-picked by your child’s teacher to go along with the history or literature curriculum of the grade the student is entering.  It is the desire of your child’s teacher to instill a love of reading so every selection not only has academic value, but a topic that will hopefully engage your child and take him or her to a wonderful place of imaginary characters filled with excitement and fun.

It is our desire to help each student be successful and reading promotes success in every subject.
